Exploring Creativity Through Fiber Arts

The Zehlians are pleased to announce another successful Artist-in-Residence event at Challenger Elementary School!
This year, fifth-grade students had the opportunity to explore the art of dry felting with fiber and textile artist Aliza Novacek-Olson. Through this hands-on experience, students learned about the process of transforming wool into art while discovering a new and creative way to express themselves.
Aliza Novacek-Olson is a fiber and textile artist based in Northwest Minnesota. Her work is rooted in traditional textile techniques and a deep respect for natural materials. She works across a wide range of fiber arts, including weaving, needle felting, wet felting, spinning wool, natural dyeing, and nålbinding.
Aliza’s work reflects her interest in how textiles were made in the past and what those traditional processes can teach us about daily life, culture, and resourcefulness. Sharing these techniques with students gave them a chance to connect with an art form that combines creativity, craftsmanship, and history.
The event was both fun and engaging, giving students the opportunity to experiment with a new medium and create something of their own. Experiences like these encourage students to explore their creativity, try something unfamiliar, and discover the many ways art can be made.
We extend our sincere thanks to the Northwest Minnesota Arts Council for the generous grant that made this Artist-in-Residence experience possible. We are grateful for their support of arts education and for helping bring unique creative opportunities to our students!
